by Taivara, Enterprise Results at Startup Speed
How Taivara helped a startup break into a paper-dependent industry, validate product-market fit, and unlock enterprise value.
A Market Running on Paper
Home and community-based service providers supporting adults with developmental disabilities tracked everything on paper. Care workers documented every activity, every medication administered, every hour worked in binders that traveled with them throughout the day. At the end of each week, someone manually entered all of it into a computer.
The problem was not just inefficiency. These workers delivered community integration support: accompanying clients to appointments, social activities, and daily life in the community. Carrying a binder was cumbersome at best and a barrier to quality care at worst. The data entry overhead consumed hours of staff time every week with zero clinical value.
The startup believed there was a better way. Taivara was brought in to help prove it.
The Startup Catch-22
Rather than advise them to wait, Taivara proposed a different approach. We built a fully interactive prototype without writing a single line of production code. It looked and felt like a real application. It could be placed in front of real users and generate real feedback.
Spending a fraction of a full build budget, the client now had something tangible to take to market.
Validating Before Building
The goal was not to ask what features they wanted. The goal was to understand what they were actually trying to accomplish, where their current processes broke down, and what they genuinely valued in a solution.
The response was clear. Customers agreed the product would save them significant time and money. Several committed to purchase once it was ready. The catch-22 was broken.
Building the Right Way
The solution required more than a mobile app. Care workers needed an intuitive, field-ready interface. Operators needed a full back-end to manage client schedules, service plans, medications, and billing across their organizations. Everything had to communicate in real time and be stored securely.
Taivara selected a React Native front-end and Ruby on Rails back-end. React Native allowed us to deploy a single codebase to both iOS and Android, cutting development time and cost significantly. Rails gave us a mature, extensible API framework with substantial out-of-the-box functionality, reducing the amount of custom engineering required.
The UX design required a different lens than a typical consumer app. Acquisition and retention metrics did not apply here. The users were care workers whose job was to provide attentive, hands-on support. The app needed to work quickly and intuitively, minimize time on screen, and serve a workforce that included many non-native English speakers. We designed for tap-first, language-agnostic interaction throughout.
From Startup to Acquisition
That market position created enterprise value. The client was ultimately acquired, validating the original thesis: a paper-dependent market, approached with the right product strategy, represented a significant opportunity.
Taivara’s role spanned the full arc from concept validation through funded development, helping the client move faster, spend smarter, and build with confidence at every stage.
